The history of the Christmas carol dates back to the 9th and 10th centuries, when a group of people would travel from house to home singing carols for gifts or money. These rewards included mince pies, glasses of appropriate beverage, and gifts. In England, the money collected by groups of singers was usually donated to charity. But even before this tradition was born, Christmas carols were known worldwide. It was not until the 20th century that most of these traditional carols gained popularity.
After A Christmas Carol was published, it quickly became a holiday staple. Its debut edition sold out on Christmas Eve, and its sales grew. By the end of the year, thirteen editions had been printed. Dickens and his publisher were not happy with the popularity of the book and, while he was making small profits, he was not able to sell the book at a profit. Dickens continued to write four other Christmas stories, but his most popular was “A Christmas Carol” and remains a best seller even today.
